In what has been dubbed a first-of-its-kind event, an all-female team of aviators will fly over the Super Bowl on Sunday, celebrating the 50th anniversary of women pilots in the navy.
Among those participating in the flyover is U.S. Navy Lt. Lyndsay Evans of Palmdale, California, who joined KNX News Radio to discuss the honor.
Evans shared that being a part of Sunday’s flyover is big for her and her fellow pilots, who wouldn’t be able to do what they do without those who first broke the barrier for women pilots in the navy.
“It’s huge that we’ve gotten to this point. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for those women in 1973, kind of paving the way, essentially starting everything to make this happen,” Evans said. “It’s nice that for what they did, now what we do isn’t even a question mark.”
Looking up to the sky wasn’t anything new for Evans when she decided to go into the navy and become a pilot, as she shared that her mother worked for NASA and that she had often visited airshows growing up.
“I always knew I wanted to do something in aviation,” Evans said.
Since being given the honor to be a part of the flyover, Evans says that she has been working with her fellow aviators to perfect their performance.
“I think we got our time in and our form nailed down. But I think we’d be lying if we said we weren’t a little bit nervous. But it’s a healthy kind of nervous,” Evans said. “We care. We want to make it look good.”
While Evans is a Rams fan, Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles will have the support from at least one fighter jet at kickoff, as she says she is hoping they take down the Chiefs.
