President Joe Biden seemed to raise some eyebrows on Sunday when he said things got “kind of bad” when he was vice president during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The remarks from Biden came while he was speaking at a campaign event with the NAACP and seemed to confuse those in attendance as the virus hit more than three years after Biden left office in January 2017.
“When I was vice president, things were kind of bad during the pandemic, and what happened was, Barack said to me, ‘Go to Detroit! Help fix it,’” Biden said. “Well, the poor mayor, he’s spent more time with me than he ever thought he’s gonna have to!”
It isn’t clear what event Biden was referring to during his remarks, as many say it is just the latest example of his age catching up with him.
But this wasn’t the only blunder that Biden faced over the weekend, as he was also caught applauding a speech from the valedictorian for Morehouse College in Atlanta after he called for an “immediate and permanent cease-fire” in his speech.
While the president is pushing for the fighting to stop, he has held steady in his support for Israel.
During his speech, some faculty and students could be seen turning their backs on Biden, while others opted to not attend the ceremony.
“I support peaceful, nonviolent protest,” Biden said as several turned to face away from him. “Your voices should be heard. I promise you I hear them.”
The blunders from Biden come at a time when his campaign is fighting to show he is in good mental and physical health and that his opponent, former President Donald Trump, is not.
Over the weekend, the Biden campaign circulated a clip from one of Trump’s speeches that appeared to show him freeze for 30 seconds and another where he grabbed onto a wobbly podium.
The Biden campaign social media accounts were quick to point out the moments, insinuating that Trump may not be as fit for the job as he claims, taking a page directly out of his playbook.
“A feeble Trump nearly falls down on stage after he leans on his podium too hard and then goes on an angry rant calling his event workers ‘crappy,’” one post reads.
Trump responded in a post to Truth Social, saying that Biden’s campaign was pulling for straws as the president continues to prove he isn’t fit for the job.
“The reason they came up with this Disinformation is that Biden freezes all the time, can’t put two sentences together, and can rarely find his way off the stage without help,” Trump said in his post. “Donald Trump doesn’t freeze! It is a MADE UP Biden Campaign story, put out in a dying Newspaper that I never heard of, and every Reporter knows it, including the large group that was there.”
