A bird hunter in Iowa was fatally shot in the face by another hunter on Saturday, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The incident happened at the Bays Branch Wildlife Area, and the DNR shared that the Guthrie Sheriff’s Department responded after being notified that a hunter was shot.
Seth Egelhoff, 26, of Chesterfield, Illinois, was rushed by emergency medics to a place where he could be picked up by a medical helicopter, but he died along the way, the release shared.
The DNR said that its law enforcement agency is investigating the shooting, though the other hunter was not identified, nor did it share if charges would be pressed at this time.
This is not the first hunting fatality to hit Iowa this year, as the state’s DNR shared that there have been two others and several incidents.
Hunters are being urged to “observe the area in front of and behind the game, so if they miss, the shot will fall harmlessly to the ground.”
