With many movies going straight to streaming services in recent years, the movie theater industry has been hurting. Plenty have wondered if fans would ever be drawn back to movie theaters, as some admit they prefer the convenience of home viewing.
Luckily for those that still cherish the movie theater experience, it appears that trend could be slowing down, as thanks to ‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’ Cinemark announced they had their largest attendance day since 2019 over the weekend.
When ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ hit movie theaters last summer, many claimed its popularity helped save the movie theater industry. Now, another movie can be added to the list, thanks to ‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’ having the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated film.
Cinemark also was able to hit a mark they haven’t seen in years, as the Plano-based movie theater chain claimed April 8 was their largest single attendance day since Christmas 2019.
It wasn’t just ‘The Super Mario Bros Movie’ that did the trick, as a strong opening for ‘Air’ as well as carry-over from ‘John Wick: Chapter 4,’ ‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,’ and ‘Scream VI’ brought many to the theater. According to WFAA, there were more than one million tickets sold for the day on Saturday.
