A passenger on a Virgin Voyages cruise ship died after falling from their “balcony onto a lower deck” on the ocean liner Sunday night, the company shared.
The Virgin Voyages cruise ship had departed from PortMiami early on Sunday before it returned immediately to shore after the passenger fell at around 9:30 p.m. EST.
A report from Insider noted that the passenger fell onto another passenger, who was not seriously injured by the incident.
The passenger’s identity has not been made public, nor has any information about what caused their fall.
“On Sunday, shortly after departure, there was a medical emergency involving one of our passengers,” Virgin Voyages said in a statement. “This passenger went over their balcony onto a lower deck, and despite receiving immediate medical attention, has passed away.”
The company added in its press release that it is “deeply saddened by this loss of life” and that “our hearts and thoughts are with this person’s loved ones.”
Virgin Voyages also announced that it is working with local law enforcement as an investigation begins into the circumstances surrounding the passenger’s death.
