Why did the chicken cross the road?

We all know the answer is usually “to get to the other side,” but that plan… didn’t really work out for one chicken that reportedly jumped out of a truck and onto an expressway in Dallas, Texas.

A video shared by the Dallas Texas TV Facebook account shows a large chicken leaping from the back of a truck, directly in front of another motorist. Its caption said that the bird jumped from an 18-wheeler to the Central Texas Expressway.

After the leap, the chicken seemed pretty confused, and it took a minute to simply sit there.

“Oh no,” a voice can be heard saying in the background of the video.

“I literally don’t know what to do,” said another.

They also said “he’s too big” and asked “he can’t get over?”

The video ends on a mysterious note, and the fate of the adventurous chicken is unclear.

According to Statista, there were around 513 million chickens in the U.S. as of last year. David Frame, an Extension poultry specialist at Utah State University, explained that chickens are actually attracted to gravel since picking at it can help with their digestion, according to a 2021 article in Successful Farming. He also said they like to dust themselves with it.

“Make sure you have a place for them to dust and pick around in gravel. Make sure you provide them with calcite and everything in a designated place away from the road so they'll have less of a tendency to want to go out there,” Frame suggested to chicken owners hoping to prevent their own birds from wandering off.
