A United Airlines flight headed to Los Angeles was diverted to Chicago Wednesday because of a bomb threat.
WLS in Chicago reported that a passenger “physically tangled” with the in-cabin crew and other passengers on board United Flight 1533. Sources reportedly told WPVI the word “bomb” was used at some point.
A preliminary police report revealed a note that said the plane would blow was found in the bathroom, according to CBS Chicago.
A passenger onboard described to the outlet how airline officials addressed the issue.
“I would say two hours in they said we were making an emergency landing in Chicago,” he said. “They didn't say why but we couldn't get out of our seats. So when they landed, they said that somebody had written on the mirror in one of the bathrooms that there was a bomb. So of course they took all precautions. They got us off the plane into buses back to the terminal.”
The outlet also reported that a bomb-sniffing K-9 found one suspicious bag and they used a robot to move it away.
The incident was classified as a “Level Two,” according to multiple outlets.
United Airlines released the following statement regarding the incident:
"United flight 1533 diverted to Chicago this morning due to a potential security concern. The flight landed safely and met local law enforcement upon arrival. Customers deplaned and we expect the flight to depart for Los Angeles later this afternoon."
