Former Texas Longhorns star Jordan Shipley is in critical but stable condition after suffering severe burns in an accident on his ranch in Texas on Tuesday, his family said.

In a statement released by the Texas athletic department, the family said Shipley was operating a machine on his ranch near his hometown of Burnet when it caught fire. He suffered severe burns on his body and was driven to a local hospital by a ranch worker before being airlifted to Austin, where he remains hospitalized.

Shipley, 40, was a standout receiver and kick returner for Texas from 2006 to 2009. A two-time All-American, he holds several single-season school records, including 1,489 receiving yards and 116 receptions in 2009. He is the program’s career leader in receptions with 248 and ranks second in career receiving yards with 3,191, trailing only Roy Williams.

Shipley was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 2010 NFL draft and later played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Jacksonville Jaguars before retiring in 2014.

The family said further updates will be shared as his condition progresses.
