“This is the first time I’ve ever seen the media cover Black on Black crime, so I’m quite surprised by this.”
That was partly how Fox News pundit Jesse Watters characterized the coverage of Will Smith’s slap of Chris Rock in the middle of Sunday’s Academy Awards broadcast.
Rock had just made a joke about the shaved head of Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia, an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss.
Smith retaliated in defense of his wife by walking up on stage and slapping Rock across the face, then shouting profanities at him once he retook his seat.
Watters was discussing the incident as a panelist on the Fox News commentary show “The Five.”
“If Mel Gibson had done this, can you believe? Nancy Pelosi would be kneeling in the Capitol right now. He would have been the only guy not being allowed out on bail in L.A. County,” he said. “The fact that the L.A. sheriff didn’t haul this guy out of there at the next commercial break explains why there’s such a huge crime problem in this country.”
