Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is expected to lead a delegation of House members to visit people arrested for participating in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. A date for the visit has not yet been set.
Greene and House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) told POLITICO about the plans Tuesday evening, according to the outlet.
Its report said that Comer and Greene’s aides were working to set up the trip. While both are members of the Oversight Committee, the trip will not be limited to members of that panel.
“A letter on the opportunity is expected to go out to lawmakers this week,” POLITICO said.
This week, Greene has taken to Twitter to make claims about the Capitol riot, which resulted in property destruction as well as several deaths.
“The J6 Committee LIED to America,” she said in a Monday tweet regarding the Select Committee that investigated the riot. She referenced a report from Fox Host Tucker Carlson regarding video footage from the riot.
Carlson’s report claimed the video shows the insurrectionists – many who have been identified as supporters of former President Donald Trump who wanted to obstruct the confirmation of votes for current President Joe Biden, who beat Trump in the 2020 election – were “meek” and not violent.
“Anyone who watched that video would… disagree,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said of Carlson’s report.
Last month, court documents revealed that Carlson and other Fox hosts were critical of election fraud claims that fueled the crowd at the Capitol on Jan. 6.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, around 1,000 people had been arrested for participating in the riot as of Monday. More than 100 individuals have been charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to a law enforcement officer.
Greene called the Jan. 6 rioters “protestors” in another tweet Tuesday.
She has already toured the jail where the rioters are being held with former Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas). POLITCO reported that she called for GOP commitments to investigate the facility.
“A review found that the separate wing housing Jan. 6 inmates is ‘largely appropriate,’” said the outlet.
