After storms ripped through North Texas, the Great Plains, and other parts of the country this week, the Better Business Bureau is working to remind homeowners to be cautious of scams when hiring contractors.
The BBB says that those affected by the storms should first contact their insurance company to find out what is covered, what their deductible is, and how to file a claim.
After doing that, they will then want to find a contractor, but researching who you are hiring is the most important step.
The BBB says that research should start with checking to see if the company is registered and licensed. Victims should then ask for references from their insurance provider or family and friends.
If you are still looking for reassurance, the bureau says to check out its website for reviews.
The bureau is also warning to be cautious of storm chasers, or those who prey on victims by offering deals for hiring them right away.
These predators will often come straight to the door of victims, but asking for an ID or solicitation permit and double checking their business name online will help determine whether or not they are a scam.
If a contractor offers to waive the deductible for the job, make sure your insurance has agreed to it, as it is illegal for them to do so without permission.
The BBB also stresses that you should not sign anything that gives the contractor any rights to the insurance claims.
When the job is done, paying can also lead to potential scams. Ask your contractor for an invoice and pay them directly. Using a credit card for the payment can add an additional level of protection with fraud protection. If the work isn’t done and hasn’t been inspected, do not make any final payments.
