Saturday night, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana received multiple reports from drivers of a woman, dressed all in black and shrouded in thick fog, standing in the middle of the road.
Turns out those reports were not just the beginnings of an urban legend.
LPSO spokesperson Valerie Ponsetti confirmed to KLFY-TV that those eyewitness accounts of the mysterious woman in the fog, standing with her head down and appearing morose, were 100% true.
Ponsetti said detectives were able to locate the woman and get her into treatment.
“All I can confirm right now is that she was taken to a local hospital,” Ponsetti said.
The television station’s news desk received some of the same calls that the police did. Saturday night when the incident occurred around midnight.
“This woman just stood there,” one caller said. “Her head down. I only narrowly avoided hitting her. The fog was so thick and I did not see her until the last second. At first, I wanted to get out and ask her if she was okay, but I was too scared and it was so dark and foggy. I went around her and got out of the area and called police.”
Another said they had to drive their car into a ditch to avoid the woman.
“I’m still shaken by what happened. My daughter was in the car with me, and she’s been having nightmares,” the caller said.
Police did not offer any other information regarding the woman’s identity or motive.
