Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) paid her rent and utility bills with money her campaign raised, according to documents filed Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission.
The four payments totaling $6,650 violate federal campaign finance laws. The campaign described two of the deposits, which amounted to $2,000 each, as “rent billed to campaign via Venmo in error,” Forbes said.
The records accounting for the second quarter of 2021 show Boebert reimbursed the campaign for the total amount.
In August, the FEC warned Boebert’s campaign the Commission might consider further sanctions after the payments first appeared on a July campaign finance report, the Denver Post said. Boebert initially only listed it as a “personal expense” that she billed to her campaign account in error. The FEC asked her to clarify.
The Commission said it would exercise some discretion because of Boebert’s “prompt” reimbursement.
Forbes said Boebert’s office has not responded to questions on the payments.
