So you want to host a New Year’s Eve party that is light on cleanup and preferably won’t enrage your neighbors. Sounds like an impossible endeavor, but you’ve got a bright idea… use SOMEONE ELSE’S HOUSE.
With services like Airbnb, such forward thinking is not just a pipe dream but rather a booking away from reality.
And yet… not so fast.
Alas, you are not the first to hatch this brainstorm. In fact, far from it. So far from it that Airbnb is cracking down on New Year’s Eve parties held at properties they represent.
The app has begun barring anyone without a positive account history from booking an entire home for a single night. The same goes for new users with no prior history, who are banned entirely from using the platform for the time-being.
“We’re also introducing tighter restrictions for those same guests who try to book two- and three-night reservations, with an emphasis on attempts to book locally,” a company spokesperson said. “These proactive defenses will help to promote responsible travel and help to prevent rare instances of unwelcome behavior, and enable Hosts, guests and communities to enjoy their end of year celebrations with added reassurance.”
In other words, Airbnb opted to trade in ball-drops for a mic drop to welcome in 2023.
