A Michigan man is being held on a $1 million bond after police say he killed his wife by intentionally hitting her with their SUV.

Police say the victim, 45-year-old Melissa Casterman, was driving with her husband, 58-year-old Mark Casterman, just after 11 a.m. Friday when the couple began arguing. It happened along US-31 in Free Soil Township, about 110 miles northwest of Grand Rapids, where the couple resides.

"Ms. Casterman pulled to the southbound shoulder of the road, exited the car, crossed the highway, and started walking southbound along the northbound shoulder," the Mason County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

Police say Mark Casterman got behind the wheel and drove past his wife before doing a final U-turn.

"The suspect accelerated southbound on US31, crossed the centerline, traveled down the northbound shoulder, and struck the victim," police said. "The victim was killed instantly."

Police said Mark Casterman was intoxicated at the time. He was arrested at the scene and is facing multiple charges including open murder and operating while intoxicated causing death.

"Although I am heartbroken that such an event could play out in our community and done so publicly for innocent citizens to witness, I am grateful to our investigators," said Sheriff Kim Cole. "They worked tirelessly throughout the weekend putting this case together and did so with the commitment to finding the truth and seeking justice for the victim."
