Local authorities have shared more information on the discovery of human remains over the weekend. The man who discovered the human skeleton was searching for shed deer antlers when he stumbled across them.
The man who made the discovery had been searching for antlers in Humboldt, Kansas, on Saturday when he stumbled upon something strange.
Noticing that what he had found was not antlers, but a human skeleton, the man contacted local authorities at the Allen County Sheriff’s Office, which contacted the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for assistance, a press release shared.
“On Saturday, March 18, at around 5:50 p.m., the Allen County Sheriff’s Office requested KBI assistance with the investigation. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team responded to the scene,” the KBI shared in a statement. “Upon arrival, they found human skeletal remains.”
Now both agencies are working together to conduct a death investigation and uncover why the remains were located in the area.
The person whose remains were discovered has still not been identified, and authorities shared in a news release that it is not known how long the body has been there.
Identifying the remains is expected to take longer than usual because of their condition of the remains. Still, an autopsy has been rescheduled.
“Positive identification is expected to take longer than typical cases due to the condition of the remains,” the agency said. “Death investigations may be determined to be the result of homicide, suicide, natural causes, or an accident. No threat to the public exists related to this incident.”
An investigation has now been launched into the discovery of the remains, but authorities did not mention if they believe a missing person report to be connected.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME or the Allen County Sheriff’s Office at (620) 365-1400.
