Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) didn’t wait to share his thoughts on Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell’s (KY) decision to step down from his position, taking to social media to praise the decision at the expense of the senator and other ex-Republican leaders.
“We’ve now 86’d: McCarthy, McDaniel, McConnell,” Gaetz wrote in a Wednesday post on X. “Better days are ahead for the Republican Party.”
Gaetz was referring to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who he led the movement to oust late last year, and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel, who decided to step down this week.
The news from McConnell was seen as a shock to many, as the elder senator was deciding whether or not to endorse former President Donald Trump’s campaign for reelection earlier this week.
But now, after criticism over his health and mental capacity, McConnell is stepping down this November.
Gaetz continued to celebrate what he and other far-right Congressmen see as a win for their group of Republicans.
After the 2022 midterms, Gaetz had taken a shot at all three of the party leaders in a post to X, writing “McCarthy, McConnell, McDaniel McFailure.”
It has not been made clear who will succeed McConnell when he steps down from his position.
