The mother of an 8-year-old boy who was severely wounded in the Highland Park Fourth of July shooting is speaking out.

Keely Roberts is the mother of 8-year-old Cooper Roberts. The boy suffered a severed spinal cord in the shooting.

In an online video, Keely Roberts thanked people for the outpouring of support. She said she wants to focus on the generosity of spirit her family has experienced since the shooting.

She said her son will recover.

"The world needs to focus on the kindness that exists in the world today,” Roberts said. “That's the bigger story. Cooper's story is still to be continued. I encourage everyone to continue watching. He's going to change the world.”

Cooper Roberts recently received a care package from the Milwaukee Brewers, his favorite baseball team.

Keely Roberts said mothers have a reservoir of strength in especially challenging times.

"When it gets tough, and I mean real tough — like, real, real tough — we find a gear we never knew we had," Roberts said.

Roberts is the Superintendent of Zion Elementary School District 6. She has been posting updates on her son's recovery on the district's web page.

In the most recent report, she said Cooper is still in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. He is beginning to move around in a wheelchair.
