Newly released police dispatch audio is shedding light on the moments leading up to the death of Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland.

The 24-year-old died early Thursday morning from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Frisco after a police chase, according to authorities.

The recordings reveal that Kneeland’s girlfriend told police late Wednesday night he was armed, had a history of mental illness, and had said “he will end it all.” Officers later learned from NFL officials that Kneeland had texted his family goodbye.

Troopers and Frisco police found his body near his abandoned vehicle along Dallas Parkway around 1:30 a.m.

Kneeland’s death has prompted tributes from teammates and renewed calls for mental health awareness across professional sports.
