NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Vernon Winfrey, the father of Oprah Winfrey, died Friday in Nashville, she announced Saturday afternoon. He was 88.
"Yesterday with family surrounding his bedside I had the sacred honor of witnessing the man responsible for my life, take his last breath," Oprah Winfrey, 68, said of her dad who had a barber shop and had been a city councilor. "We could feel Peace enter the room at his passing. He had a barber shop and had also been a city councilor. "That Peace still abides. All is well. Thank you for your prayers and good thoughts

Vernon Winfrey had been battling cancer and his daughter had traveled to Tennessee to visit her dad over the Fourth of July weekend to hold a "Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Celebration," she said in a video posted to Instagram following the celebration.
"So we’ve been planning a backyard barbecue that’s actually more than a backyard barbecue. It's for Vernon Winfrey Appreciation Day," the 68-year-old said. "My father is ill and so we wanted to be able to have all of his friends come and celebrate him while he’s able to receive the joy."
In Saturday's Instagram post, she wrote of the celebration, "Less than a week ago we honored my father in his own backyard. My friend and gospel singer Wintley Phipps saluted him with song. He FELT the love and reveled in it until he could no longer speak."
It is unknown which type of cancer Vernon Winfrey had, and the exact cause of death.
