(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — After nearly 100 years, Oscar Mayer’s famous, hot-dog-shaped “Wienermobile” is getting a refresh.

Oscar Mayer officials announced the Wienermobile would henceforth be known as the “Frankmobile,” which company officials described as an homage to the brand’s “100% beef franks.”

The new fleet of six Frankmobiles will hit the road this week, officials said. The name of the vehicle wasn’t the only change, though. Drivers will now be known as “Frankfurters” — they were previously known as “Hotdoggers.” Even the “Wiener Whistles,” which were Wienermobile-shaped whistles, will be renamed as “Frank Whistles.”

The frankness doesn’t stop there. As the Frankmobiles make their way around the country, anyone whose name is an iteration of Frank will be eligible to receive a coupon for a free pack of Oscar Mayer beef franks.

Oscar Mayer officials made no mention of changing the name of its WienerCycle, WienerRover and WienerDrone, all of which debuted in 2017.

Most recently, the Wienermobile made headlines after someone stole its catalytic converter while it was in Las Vegas for a series of appearances over Super Bowl weekend.

Company officials said Wednesday that the Wienermobile was a “beloved American icon that has been sparking smiles and driving craveability for our iconic, delicious wieners for nearly 100 years.”

The Wienermobile debuted in 1936, when the “country’s spirits needed lifting,” according to the Oscar Mayer website. After a nine-year hiatus starting in the 1970s, the Wienermobile got back on the road in 1986. Two years later, the company debuted a new fleet of six, 23-foot-long Wienermobiles. The rebrand to the Frankmobile is the iconic vehicle’s latest chapter.
