Police in Nevada arrested a high school student in connection with a deadly home invasion after they found his math homework in the getaway car.
Eighteen-year-old Kamari Oliver, a student in the Clark County School District, was arrested by police and is now facing charges of robbery, burglary, kidnapping, and murder in the killing of Natalie Manduley, the Las Vegas-Review Journal reported.
On March 25, Manduely was fatally shot in her home that she shared with her boyfriend and another woman after a group of suspects -- three men and a woman -- broke into the house around 2:10 p.m., police said.
The burglars reportedly demanded that Manduley give them her money while holding her at gunpoint.
At one point, her roommate was forcibly put in a closet while the robbers asked what was in the home’s safe.
The robbery quickly went south, and Manduley was fatally shot during a gunfire exchange with the suspects. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
The suspects were caught fleeing by a man who used his vehicle to ram their white Mercedes sedan into a wall before they fled on foot, police said.
A red backpack was recovered with $5,000 in cash in the abandoned Mercedes, which allowed them to identify Oliver, investigators said.
“Inside the backpack was a school Chrome Book along with a notebook of schoolwork, specifically math work,” police said, the Journal reported. “In the top right corner of the schoolwork, the name ‘Kamari Oliver’ and ‘5th Period’ were written.”
While investigating the discovery of the laptop, police found that Oliver was given an unexcused absence for the last two periods of the same day that the robbery and murder took place.
Oliver was arrested at the high school March 28 with a burn and laceration above his right eye, but his attorney claimed in a statement that his client was innocent and evidence would prove so.
“I think the evidence is going to show he never went inside of that house,” Dan Winder said in a statement received by the Journal. “He’s an 18-year-old with no prior criminal history as an adult or juvenile. We believe the facts are going to show he was not involved in any murder.”
Police have said that the robbery is believed to be planned, noting that Manduley’s boyfriend is known for selling high-end jewelry.
The investigation and search for the remaining suspects is ongoing at this point.
