Maryland police were searching for a suspect in a fatal shooting at a gas station when they discovered the body of a possibly pregnant woman decomposing in the suspect’s home, police said.
Montgomery County Police shared that Torrey Moore, 31, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder on Friday after allegedly shooting Dash In Convenience Store-employee Ayalew Wondimu, 61.
While investigating the shooting, detectives ended up at the apartment of Moore, located across the street from the gas station.
Moore was captured on security footage leaving the convenience store after the shooting on Thursday. Witnesses helped police identify him, and store employees said he was a well-known “problem customer.”
Prior to the shooting, Moore could be seen getting into a confrontation with Wondimu before pulling out a handgun and firing it several times, hitting the clerk in the chest.
Police obtained a search warrant for the apartment and proceeded to execute it late last week, Montgomery County Police Chief Marcus Jones said during a press conference on Friday.
“When SWAT made entry, and after arresting Moore, they discovered a deceased female, believed to be an adult, on the floor in the apartment in an advanced stage of decomposition,” Jones told reporters.
Police shared that Moore allegedly told them he was in a relationship with a woman who was eight months pregnant when she died.
Jones also shared that Moore allegedly said, “there had been some type of fight between the two about one month prior that led to the victim becoming deceased prior to today.”
The woman’s cause of death is still unknown, but a medical examiner is set to perform an autopsy this week that will also tell whether or not the woman was pregnant and how far along she was, Jones said.
Jones said there was nothing amiss in the apartment, and there haven’t been any missing persons discovered connected to the situation.
“This is very new to us, again a surprising discovery upon our entry this morning. So we’ve got a lot of work to do,” Jones said. “We’re a little bit amazed that we did not receive any calls, none that we have seen, thus far, that would have given us any indication that something was occurring within that apartment.”
Police are still investigating exactly what happened in the shooting and with the remains found in his apartment. Additional charges could be announced after the medical examiner files their report on the woman’s cause of death.
