As two coworkers argued on Memorial Day in a Baton Rouge, La., Popeyes, one of them shot the other in the butt.

That’s according to police reports cited by WAFB, which identified 21-year-old Kieran Demond Johnson as the suspect. His own mother, also an employee at the restaurant, witnessed the shooting, per the outlet.

Records from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office showed that Johnson was booked June 7 and remained in prison as of June 10. He was charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.

“The shooting happened Wednesday night, May 31, at the Popeyes on O’Neal Lane,” said WAFB. “Arrest records state Johnson and the victim got into a fight inside the restaurant, which was broken up by their co-workers. As the victim walked outside, Johnson retrieved a gun from his bag and followed him outside, shooting at him twice, one of which hit him in the butt.”

Officials said the suspect fled on foot while the victim ran to a nearby Waffle House.

According to a 1997 study, “gunshot wounds to the buttocks may cause significant intra-abdominal injuries,” and another study found that “penetrating buttock trauma is morbid but rarely fatal.”

Gunshot wounds to the derriere also have a place in American history: Meriwether Lewis of the Lewis & Clark expedition was shot in the butt by one of his own men, Pierre Cruzatte, according to the National Park Service. In that case, the shooting was an accident – Cruzatte had poor eyesight and Lewis was wearing elk skins while hunting elk.
