A massive recall has been issued for several varieties of dry shampoo products that may contain elevated levels of benzene, a chemical known to cause cancer.
The Food and Drug Administrations said the voluntary recall includes 19 aerosol spray products that were manufactured by Unilever and sold under brand names Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI (Rockaholic and Bed Head), and TRESemmé.
The recalled products were distributed nationwide at retail stores and online. The products are packaged in aerosol cans and were produced prior to October 2021, according to the FDA. Retailers have been notified to remove the products from shelves, but officials are concerned that some consumers may still be using the products at home.

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen. Exposure to benzene can occur by inhalation, orally, and through the skin, and it can result in cancers including leukemia and blood cancer of the bone marrow, and blood disorders which can be life threatening.
Unilever said an internal investigation identified the propellant as the source. The company has worked with its propellant suppliers to address this issue.
Based on an independent health hazard evaluation, Unilever says daily exposure to benzene in the recalled products at the levels detected in testing would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences. Still, the products are being recalled out of an abundance of caution.
Unilever has received no reports of adverse events to date relating to this recall.
Consumers should stop using the affected aerosol dry shampoo products and visit UnileverRecall.com for instructions on how to receive reimbursement for eligible products.
Last December, Procter & Gamble issued a similar recall for 32 aerosol spray products sold under brand names Pantene, Aussie, Herbal Essences and Waterless, for elevated levels of benzene.
