School shooting in Madison, Wisconsin: At least three dead and six injured — including suspect, who was a student there

Updated 3 p.m. EST -- Police reported that they had mistakenly inflated the number of victims and that in fact three people died at the Madison, Wisconsin, school shooting, including the victim. Six others were injured.

Officers said the deceased shooter had been a student at the school, Abundant Life Christian School, which has 390 children from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Madison Police Chief Shon F. Barnes said officers did not fire their weapons and called it a “sad, sad day” for the country. No motive is yet known.

Updated 1:40 p.m. EST — Police reported that at least four people have died and five were left injured after a school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin on Monday.

Police also noted that the suspect, who was identified as a juvenile, is dead.

“Officers located a juvenile who they believe was responsible for this deceased in the building,” Chief Barnes shared.

It has not been shared if the victims are students or staff from the school.

Updated 1:35 p.m. EST — During a press conference following the shooting at Abundant Life Christian School Police Chief Shon Barns shared that the incident was called in at 10:57 a.m. local time.

Barnes didn’t give exact numbers, but noted that, “When officers arrived, they found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.”

The investigation remains ongoing at this time.

“Yet another police chief is doing a press conference to speak about violence in our community, specifically in one of the places that’s most sacred to me as someone who loves education and to someone who has children that are in schools,” Barnes said.

Updated 1:20 p.m. EST — Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes told CNN that the shooting resulted in several casualties and that some of the victims have been transported to area hospitals.

Among those transported were children, the chief shared.

Barnes also noted that one suspect is done and that authorities are still conducting secondary searchers of buildings and vehicles.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Ever shared on X that he was “closely monitoring” the situation at Abundant Life Christian School in Madison.

“We are praying for the kids, educators, and entire Abundant Life school community as we await more information and are grateful for the first responders who are working quickly to respond,” Ever said.

Initial story — Police in Madison, Wisconsin, are investigating a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School that was reported just before 11 a.m. in the state’s capital city.

Police have shared that multiple people have been injured in the incident and that the shooter is “down,” ABC News reported.

“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” the Madison Police Department said in a statement. “More information will be released as it is available. We currently need people to avoid the area.”

The school is located at 4901 East Buckeye Road, and the scene is still considered active. The public is being asked to avoid the area.

Parents and students were reuniting at the SSM Health building near the intersection of East Buckeye Road and Stoughton Road, Channel 3000 reported.

It is not yet clear the state of the shooter, who or how many were injured, or what the motive was.

The school has students from kindergarten through 12th grade.
