A 12-year-old boy is recovering after being burned in his science class, and his teacher is now out of a job.

The incident happened last Friday.

"A teacher had put hand sanitizer in the student's hand and lit it as part of a science experiment," says Granbury Police Lt. Russell Grizzard. "Apparently, this had been going on all day and had been done with multiple other students without any incident."

But this time around, it all went awry.

"The fire just didn't go out immediately," says Lt. Grizzard, "and he ended up having what we believe are third-degree burns on his hands."

The Granbury ISD says the teacher, a 37-year-old Granbury woman, resigned following the incident.

The boy was treated at a hospital and released. It's unknown whether his injuries will be permanent.

Grizzard says this does not appear to be an approved part of the school's science curriculum.

The case has been turned over to the Hood County District Attorney's Office for further investigation.
