Late last month, passengers on a flight from California to Hawaii were greeted with a surprise ukulele lesson. There were 180 total ukuleles on the flight.

Some people find ukulele music bright and uplifting. Others, including some who took to social media recently, said the thought of an inflight ukulele lesson sounded nightmarish.

Why do emotions seem so heightened while in flight? Host Mike Rogers explores that and more this week on the “Something Offbeat” podcast. Each episode peels back the layers of an unusual headline.

Dr. Kim Meidenbauer of the University of Chicago’s Neuroscience Research Lab joined the pod to explain various ways that humans are impacted by their environment, including heat, music and airplane interiors.

“There’s really cool research showing that people really underestimate the kind of mood benefit that they will have, by interacting with nature,” she explained. “So going for a walk through a park, people tend to underestimate the positive impact that that will have on their emotions.”
