A French high school student is behind bars after he stabbed a teacher to death during class, authorities say.
The murder occurred at a private Catholic school in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Bayonne prosecutor Jerome Bourrier told reporters.
Although further details have not been disclosed, the French media is reporting the 16-year-old claims to have heard voices that told him to kill the 53-year-old Spanish teacher.
According to French newspaper Sud Ouest, the attacker entered the classroom while the teacher was in the middle of a lesson and attacked her, per the BBC.
French TV station BFM also reported that the attacker locked the classroom door and stabbed the teacher in her chest, the BBC added.
The teen left the classroom after the attack and went to a neighboring class, where he told the teacher what had happened and handed over the knife, The Guardian reported. He was taken into custody at the scene.
The teacher, whose name has not been released, suffered cardiac arrest and died, according to Sky News.
"An investigation for assassination, that is to say murder with premeditation, has been opened," Bourrier said, per The Guardian.
A moment of silence will be observed in all French schools at 3 p.m. on Thursday, the Associated Press reported.
