Amidst faltering sales, Tesla Motors has issued another huge product recall for its fleet of electric vehicles.
Tesla’s latest recall involves software that fails to detect when the hood is unlatched. The recall affects 1.85 million vehicles sold in the U.S.
When a car is driven with the hood unlatched, the hood could fly open and obscure the driver’s view through the windshield, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Tesla Model 3’s made from 2021-2024 and Modey Y’s made from 2020-2024 are included in the recall.
The company said it opened up an investigation into complaints about the issue in March and started rolling out an over-the-air software update last month. It has received three reports of the problem from American Tesla owners, none of which involved a crash.
Back in December, Tesla issued a recall for 2.03 million vehicles in the U.S. – nearly all Tesla cars on the road at that time – to modify the vehicles’ Autopilot system with new safeguards after 20 crashes were reported.
Last week saw Tesla report its worst quarterly profit margin in over five years.
