CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A member of Congress from Indiana had his official Twitter account taken away Saturday night after transphobic comments he made last week were removed by the social media giant.

Twitter has suspended the official account for Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Banks who had posted tweets last week regarding Dr. Rachel Levine becoming the first openly transgender four-star officer in the U.S. uniformed services.

Banks had responded to Levine's promotion in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps by writing: "The title of first female four-star officer gets taken by a man."

The post was removed with a reference to Twitter rules that include a ban on "targeted misgendering" of transgender people.

Banks was reportedly standing by his post, saying in a statement that his tweet was a statement of fact, and, ”If they silence me, they will silence you. We can’t allow Big Tech to prevent us from telling the truth.”
