With the news of actor Matthew Perry’s untimely death reverberating across social media and news broadcasts over the weekend, NBC’s late-night sketch comedy stalwart Saturday Night Live chose to pay tribute to the late sitcom star.

The news of Perry’s death broke just before Saturday’s episode began.

Perry had hosted SNL just over 26 years ago, on October 4, 1997, in the midst of his run on Friends, the late-90s sitcom juggernaut that remains one of the most-loved television comedies of its time.

During that 1997 episode, Perry embodied his Friends character Chandler Bing for a skit called “Sarcasm 101,” which found him teaching a class on how best to dole out snark.

The bit also featured then-cast members Will Ferrell, Ana Gasteyer, Norm MacDonald, Tim Meadows and Cheri Oteri.

SNL’s Saturday night broadcast included a brief tribute to Perry before the closing credits.
