Will Rubio have to leave Florida to be on Trump’s ticket?

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio (R) raised eyebrows over the weekend over his response when he was asked if he would leave his state to be on former President Donald Trump’s 2024 ticket.

On Sunday, during an interview on Fox News, Rubio was asked whether or not he would consider changing his residency if he was asked to be Trump’s vice president.

The question comes as some point to a part of the Constitution that could make it difficult for the VP and president to be from the same state, meaning any Florida Republican would need to change their residency to be on his ticket.

The 12th Amendment states that after a presidential election, “the Electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.”

Fox News host Shannon Bream brought the issue in the amendment to Rubio’s attention, referring to it as a “technical glitch.”

After being asked about whether or not he would do it, Rubio quickly sidestepped the question, saying Trump is “going to have an extremely talented group of people that can serve this country in multiple roles, and that’s a decision he’s going to have to make.”

“Leaving me aside for a moment, I think that before anyone decides to move from their state, you better make sure you don’t move to a state where there’s not some DA that makes a career after going after Republicans,” Rubio said, referring to Trump’s legal troubles in New York.

Currently, the former president is facing 34 counts of falsifying business records for an alleged hush money payment he made to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election.

While the former president has not yet revealed who he will be running with this November, speculation continues to point to a small handful of potential picks.

Over the weekend, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) was also asked about potentially being Trump’s VP, to which she responded that a lot of people are being considered.

On Saturday, Stefanik was among many potential VP picks at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

The New York Republican was asked if she was brought up on stage during a speech Trump gave as a potential running mate. She responded that there were many Republicans with her.

“Oh, we had a lot of great members there,” she said. “What really came out across to me, Maria, was how unified the Republican Party is and how many rising stars we had. There’s a lot of names that are in the mix. I’m honored to have my name as one of them in the mix right now.”
