When people talk about joining the "mile high club" in an airplane bathroom, this is definitely not what they mean.
A Michigan woman ended up spending five hours in an airplane bathroom after she tested positive for the coronavirus in the middle of an international flight.
Marisa Fotieo said she was about halfway through her flight from Chicago to Iceland on December 20 when her throat started to hurt.
The ever-prepared schoolteacher whipped out one of the rapid COVID tests that she packed in her bag just in case.
"I just took my rapid test and I brought it into the bathroom, and within what felt like two seconds there were two lines (indicating a positive test)," Fotieo told NBC News.
After getting the positive result, Fotieo decided to voluntarily isolate herself inside the plane's tiny bathroom to protect the other travelers for the remainder of the flight, about five hours.
"There's 150 people on the flight, and my biggest fear was giving it to them," she said.
Fotieo posted video of her "crazy experience" on TikTok, writing "Shout out to @Icelandair for my VIP quarantine quarters." The video has been viewed more than 3 million times.
Fotieo said the flight attendants checked on her constantly and made her journey as comfortable as possible, bringing her food and drinks. They even traded Instagram handles to keep in touch -- and their kindness didn't end there.
Fotieo also had to isolate in her hotel room once she arrived in Iceland's capital city. When the flight attendants found out she would be in quarantine over Christmas, they sent a care package with flowers and a little Christmas tree to the hotel.
