Lara Trump: Virtual debate not necessary, president 'feeling fantastic'

"I think virtual has a host of problems, you know, there is always a delay, there is always a timing issue."

The next debate between the president and Democratic nominee Joe Biden is scheduled for October 15. Lara Trump, campaign advisor and daughter-in-law to President Donald Trump, told KDKA Radio that she finds it interesting that the Presidential Debate Commission and the Biden campaign are insisting that it be virtual.

By that time, she said President Trump will be “capable of doing an in-person event because he will have tested negative for COVID and it will be clear that he can’t spread it.”

"It does beg the question as to why they would insist on such a thing," she said. "Many are speculating that it's to help Joe Biden. That this is going to be a way that he'll be in his best form." She said the president really feels very strongly that a virtual debate is not acceptable.

On Thursday morning, President Trump told Fox Business he would not take place in a virtual presidential debate.

“The American people deserve to see these two men on a stage, go head to head, and discuss the issues," she said. "I think virtual has a host of problems, you know, there is always a delay, there is always a timing issue.”

In a video message, President Trump touted the benefits of an experimental treatment he was given while at Walter Reed called Regeneron. Trumps credits it with his quick recovery from COVID-19.

Lara said "The president is saying this is something we should absolutely use and I'll tell you whenever we have spoken to him, he tells us as family the exact same thing, you know. He's feeling fantastic. It's very frustrating that he can't get back to work, meaning on the campaign trail, because he feels so great. He feels ready to go."

Trump has said he wants to make the treatment available to everyone in the country and make it free. Lara told KDKA Radio "I think that that could be something that would be really helpful with getting us back to normal."

The first and only vice presidential debate took place Wednesday night between Vice President Mike Pence and Biden's running mate, Kamala Harris. Lara told KDKA Radio that she believes Vice President Mike Pence “handily” won Wednesday night’s Vice Presidential debate.

“I think the Vice President did an incredible job. I think he had Kamala Harris on the ropes the entire time. Every single time she lied - and she lied quite a bit – he pushed back very strongly,” Lara said.

Trump said the way Pence acted during the debate was a testament to who he is as a person. She said he's a "very measured guy and he's a very thoughtful person. And to see Kamala Harris there, very uncomfortable with her body language, I think she knew that she was in over her head."

Lara said she still wants to hear from the president and the former vice president again because there are many answers to questions that the American people deserve to hear. She said, "we still don't know how they [the Biden-Harris ticket] plan to do much of anything. We know that they want socialism in America. We know that they want to get rid of energy jobs because they're big fans of the Green New Deal. Other than that, we haven't heard a whole lot from the two of them and I think the American people deserve answers as we're heading towards the most consequential election in American history."

If the next debate happens on October 15 as planned, KDKA Radio will host the Pre-Debate Tailgate show, beginning three hours prior to the debate, previewing what can be expected from the two candidates.
