Senator David McCormick is pushing for term limits on members of Congress, and promises to hold himself accountable.

Specifically, he wants to cap federal lawmakers’ service at 12 years.

The junior Republican Senator from Pennsylvania has proposed an amendment that would implement term limits of two six-year terms for senators and six two-year terms for House members.

“I promise you, I’m going to term-limit myself to two terms,” McCormick told KDKA Radio’s Michael Bartley.

McCormick’s office also noted that House and Senate members’ average years of prior service has steadily increased since the early 20th century.

“When our founders wrote the Constitution and imagined the three branches of government, they didn’t imagine that people were going to be spending their whole life in elected politics,” said Senator McCormick.

McCormick says that the country needs constant change and new blood for Democracy to work.

His bill faces an uphill battle, however. So far, it does not have any co-sponsors.
