PITTSBURGH (100.1 FM and AM 1020 KDKA) This upcoming Friday, April 23, Ross Township officials will be celebrating the renaming of Sangree Park to honor Bruno Sammartino.
The park will be renamed to Bruno Sammartino Park as another way for the community to honor the former professional wrestler and Ross Township resident.
A new sign will be unveiled at the park and Ross Township Board of Commissioners President Dan DeMarco will join members of the Sammartino family for the ceremony.
Sammartino was originally born in Pizzoferrato, Italy but emigrated to Pittsburgh when he was a child and resided in Ross Township for 58 years before his death in 2018.
In July of 2019, Ross Township put up signs around the neighborhood honoring the WWE Hall of Famer.
Sammartino made his wrestling debut in 1959 and went on to become the longest reigning WWWF (WWE) champion ever with a 2,803-day run.
The park is located on 564 Sangree Road, just a short walk away from where Sammartino and his family called home.
