State Senate President Pro Tempore and Republican candidate for Pennsylvania governor Jake Corman has dropped out of the race.

Corman made the announcement Thursday morning, endorsing candidate Lou Barletta for the position. He said he believes Barletta has a chance to beat Josh Shapiro, the likely Democratic nominee.

"It's an opportunity for Republicans to win this governor's race and then to accomplish things for the people of Pennsylvania," Corman said. "The only way that we will not be successful in the fall is if we nominate someone who can't possibly win. Lou Barletta is perfectly positioned to get results for the people of Pennsylvania and I'm proud to add my voice to support him."

Corman asked other GOP candidates to get behind Barletta.

The announcement removes one candidate from a crowded GOP field, which includes Barletta, Doug Mastriano, Bill McSwain, Dave White, Joe Gale, Charlie Gerow, Melissa Hart, Nche Zama.
