Pennsylvania Senator John Fetterman is one of 40 co-sponsors of bill to ban assault weapons.

California Senator Dianne Feinstein introduced the legislation Monday after the mass shooting in Monterey Park.

Over the past four days alone there have been four mass shootings with at least 32 people being shot and 20 dead. There have already been 39 mass shootings this year, barely a month in.

The bill would ban the sale, transfer, manufacture and importation of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

Some types of guns would be exempt from the bill including 2,200 guns for hunting, household defense, and recreational use.

It would also grandfather in any weapons that are lawfully possessed at the date of enactment.

Another bill Feinstein proposed would raise the age of purchasing an assault rifle from 18 to 21.

There was once a ban on assault rifles lasting from 1994 to 2004, but lawmakers never renewed the ban once it was up.
