Learning how to write cursive becoming mandatory in PA

Learning cursive handwriting is about to become mandatory in Pennsylvania.

Governor Shapiro signed into law a bill Wednesday adding cursive handwriting to the state's required teachings.

At least 24 other states also require it be taught.

Proponents, including House Bill 17's prime sponsor Dane Watro of Eastern PA, say in the digital era, learning handwriting has fallen to the wayside.

But students will need to learn how to sign official documents.

And, supporters say learning how to write in cursive helps kids develop motor skills and it builds hand-eye coordination in developing brains.

The new law goes into effect in 60 days.
