A new bill would change the date you see on your milk containers.
The Pennsylvania State Senate unanimously approved a bill to allow milk processors to use a "best by" date instead of a "sell by" date.
Currently, they use a 17-day milk code.
"Other states don't have that 17-day milk code requirement, which is an arbitrary deadline and really doesn't reflect the freshness of the milk," said Judy Schwank in a released statement.
"Milk doesn't necessary spoil once you get to day 18. But consider consumers in the grocery store – they buy the carton with the latest date. This legislation will help make Pennsylvania milk the fresher choice."
If passed, processors would have the option to request a later best by or sell by date from the state Department of Agriculture.
The bill, introduced by senators Schwank, Elder Vogel and Judy Ward, now moves onto the House for approval.
