Members of the Pennsylvania National Guard have been activated by Governor Tom Wolf and will be sent to Washington, DC through president-elect Joe Biden's inauguration.
Approximately 1,000 members will receive their assignments over the next few days before traveling to DC.
On Wednesday, protesters and supporters of President Donald Trump swarmed on the Capitol and breached the building causing damage and injuries'. At least one person was shot and killed during the chaos.
“The unprecedented and disturbing events yesterday in our nation’s capital are cause for ongoing concern and Pennsylvania is prepared to assist as needed in securing peace and an orderly transfer of power on January 20,” Gov. Wolf said. “Our National Guard members will assist the D.C. National Guard and local civilian authorities as they work to keep the area surrounding the Capitol and other locations secure in the coming days leading up to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden.”
The PNG is the second largest in the country with about 19,000 members.
