Westinghouse's nuclear plan would mean $6 billion in PA, 15k new jobs

Westinghouse is planning to build ten large nuclear reactors in the US with construction starting by 2030.

Westinghouse Interim CEO Dan Sumner laid out the plan to President Donald Trump during a conference on energy and artificial intelligence at Carnegie Mellon University Tuesday.

“It will drive $75 billion of value across the United States with $6 billion of value here in Pennsylvania,” said Sumner.

With that $6 billion, Sumner adds the project will bring 15,000 jobs to the commonwealth alone.

Westinghouse’s AP1000 reactor generates enough electricity to power more than 750,000 homes.

Only two nuclear reactors have been built in the US in the past 30 years, both in Georgia.

Where the ten reactors will be built remains unknown.

Westinghouse is headquartered in Cranberry Township.

Two other projects linked to the summit will have a direct impact in the Pittsburgh region:

Homer City Redevelopment Group plans to buy $15 billion of Pennsylvania natural gas for a power plant to generate electricity for AI and high-performance computing.

And, the Frontier Group plans to spend over $ billion to convert the coal-fired power plant in Shippingport, Beaver County to a natural gas-powered plant.
