Severe storms rolled through our area overnight.
Heavy rain brought with it loud thunder, and according to Accuweather Meteorologist Matt Benz, more lightning than we're used to seeing.
He said there were "a lot lightning strikes hitting the ground and a lot of houses getting struck by lightning as well from these storms moving through the area."
Benz said that during a summer with frequent thunderstorms like this one, it's important to be alert. "Just because you may not see lightning, but if you hear thunder you are close enough to be struck by lightning."
If it seems like we've seen more severe weather than normal this summer, that's because we have.
"There's a ridge sitting off of the east coast of the U.S. and that's helping to funnel moisture northward from the Gulf of Mexico and off the Atlantic Ocean and at the same time, we have a pretty active jetstream moving across the upper midwest through the Great Lakes," he explained.
And Benz said it'll get worse before it gets better.
"We're kind of stuck in this weather pattern for the foreseeable future. In fact, there could even be an uptick in thunderstorm activity here towards the end of this week and especially into this weekend."
The overnight storm brought a lot of lightning, causing damage to multiple homes in the area.
