Governor Gretchen Whitmer is facing backlash from people who are calling her a hypocrite for traveling out of state while she urges Michiganders to stay home amid a coronavirus spike.

On April 5, the state's health director warned residents not to leave the state and the governor's office later confirmed that she did travel to visit her ailing father. They refused to say where she went, but online pundits say it was Florida.

"This just follows a series of missteps by the governor's office," said Jim Goodman of the Michigan Republican Party. "They're refusing to be transparent and the people of Michigan deserve much, much better considering we're going through a global pandemic."

Per freep.com, Tiffany Brown, a spokeswoman for Whitmer, would give few details about Whitmer's trip, citing "ongoing security concerns."

"Brown would not say when the trip occurred, except that it was more than a month ago and within the last six months and during a time that Michigan's coronavirus positivity rate was in the low single digits. She would not say where Whitmer went or whether Whitmer traveled alone or with others," freep reported.
