Today is Veterans Day. A day American thanks it’s heroes in uniform who served our great country to help defend it.

It falls on November 11 every year, the same day that World War 1 ended. Originally called Armistice Day, it became Veterans Day in 1954 so that all veterans from all wars and conflicts would be honored.

One of those veterans happens to be a four-time Super Bowl Champion.

Rocky Bleier was drafted into the Army after his rookie season with the Steelers and served in Vietnam, where he was wounded in his left thigh by a bullet and grenade shrapnel went into his right leg.

Bleier was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart and after several surgeries he returned to the Steelers.

Although doctors told him he could never be able to play football Bleier was an important piece in the Steelers first four Super Bowl Championships

Along with the Steelers, Bleier is marking the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II.

To mark the occasion, four members of Steelers Nation are being recognized for their contributions.

They are: 98-year-old Marine Sgt. Joe Galino of Freeport, soon to be 102-year-old Air Force LT John Mahler of Butler, 96-year-old Army Infantry SSG Elmer Glenn and U.S. Navy, Sonarman 2nd class Jack Voelzke who grew up on the North Side and will turn 95 on Thursday.

The Pittsburgh Penguins also honored our Vets with a touching tribute video posted to their social media.

The Pirates said on their social media, “today and every day, we honor the brave men and women who have served our country.”
