PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – The Pirates continue to take fliers on pitchers who might help them. It started with Brandon Eisert and then Ron Marinaccio, but this one is different.
Bucs acquired 21-year-old Felix Doroteo, who is currently in rookie ball in his first year with the White Sox out of the Dominican Republic. He’s 6’6” and in 16 games (one start), he was 3-2 with a 4.50 ERA, over 18 innings, 13 hits, 12 runs, 9 earned runs with 11 walks, 3 hit batters and 24 strikeouts. The batting average against is .210.
This isn’t someone that would likely be available for years.
The price was veteran Jose Urquidy, who was signed as a free agent in the offseason.
Urquidy made five appearances with the Pirates before being outrighted to AAA. In 6.1 innings in the majors this season he gave up 15 hits, 10 runs, 6 earned runs with a 2.68 WHIP. He had pitched better in the minors recently.
