June isn’t normally the time of year you hear Steelers coaches anointing players as a starter or where their place is on the depth chart.
But, during mandatory minicamp, wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni told reporters that Calvin Austin III is the team’s #2 WR.
“I think that two spot is all (Austin’s) right now,” Azzani told reporters on Wednesday.
The top receiver is obviously DK Metcalf, but after the Steelers traded George Pickens to Dallas, that left the team without a real number two WR.
That’s nothing new for a Steelers team that had Pickens and then everyone else last season.
But, just because Austin is the #2 right now, that doesn’t mean it will stay that way.
The Steelers are likely still looking for another wide receiver weapon for Aaron Rodgers, but right now it’s Austin, who had 36 catches for 548 yards and four touchdowns.
If the Steelers wide receiver room stays the same, they’ll need Austin to grow even more in 2025 and start to get Roman Wilson on the field.
