Pittsburgh Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington told reporters Wednesday that he has recommended to Pirates ownership that Manager Derek Shelton return in 2025.
He added that recommendation was “supported” by owner Bob Nutting.
The Pirates were in playoff contention until just after the trade deadline, when a 10-game losing streak ended any hopes that the team would be able to make the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade.
The second-half decline resulted in the same finish as last year, 76-86.
Shelton has managed 708 games for the Pirates since 2020. He is 294-414 with a .415 winning percentage over that time.
If Shelton is retained in 2025, it will be his 6th with Pittsburgh.
The Pirates confirmed that hitting coach Andy Haines and bullpen coach Justin Meccage have been fired.
“Today we announced changes that will be made to our coaching staff,” said Cherington in a statement released before the news conference. “We appreciate the hard work that both Andy and Justin did on behalf of the Pirates and wish them nothing but success,” said Cherington. “After a thorough assessment, we believe these changes are necessary. More broadly, over the past few months we have assessed every area of baseball operations with a focus on making the needed improvements to build a winning team in Pittsburgh. This work has touched every area of our operations: amateur, international and pro scouting; player development; player performance; R&D and our coaching staff. We are focused on only one thing….to build a winning team.”
