Bill Cowher was the Steelers Head Coach when they lost the organization’s first Super Bowl in history.
Super Bowl XXX against the Dallas Cowboys was a low point for Steelers fans.
While it was a hard loss for Cowher, it wasn’t the worst one during his coaching career.
Speaking to the legendary Ernie Johnson and Charles Barkley on their “Steam Room” podcast Cowher said it was an AFC Championship Game that gets to him the most against the San Diego Chargers.
“I think probably the very first AFC Championship Game in 1994,” said Cowher. “Losing the Super Bowl, that was tough, but you know you had the whole two weeks, you had the whole hoopla and there was finality on that game, so it’s over. A week later, everyone’s watching basketball.”
He says the losses to the Broncos in 1997 and the Patriots in 2001 and 04 are hard to deal with.
“To watch the team that beat you, go to the Super Bowl, all of the stories that are being told about them, you got to listen to that for two weeks, you can’t get away from it, the season’s still going on,” added Cowher.
The Steelers lost the 1994 AFC Championship Game 17-13. The Steelers had the ball 4th and goal and a pass from Neil O’Donnell to running back Barry Foster was broken up, with under 20 minutes left in the game.
Cowher would go on to win the Super Bowl 11 years later against the Seattle Seahawks.
